Web Economy To Double By 2016 – Boston Consulting Group
Monday, January 30, 2012
As always the World Economic Forum in Davos has been producing some great headlines for business journalists. One of these is that the value of the web economy in G20 countries will nearly double by 2016, according to Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The leading driver in this growth will be the rise of mobile internet access.
There’s quite an interesting article on the BBC website about this research which has been supported by Google. The assumption is that in four years time nearly 50% of the world's population will be using the internet and that the UK is one of the world’s most advanced e-commerce economies.
You’ve heard similar things here before but the BCG numbers show that by 2016 about 80% of all internet users will access the web using a mobile phone.
In this digitised world, your web strategy has to be embedded with your business strategy. The key message is that “Digital cannot be an add-on. Businesses have to adapt their people, processes and structures for the digital economy”. The quote I like best from this article is...
... "if the report's predictions are correct, then speaking of a web economy will soon sound about as comical as speaking of an electricity economy".
If you buy in to this thinking you won’t be left behind. Read the full BBC article here Web economy in G20 set to double by 2016
